"I didn't know what to ex pect as a GA. or even which nights we worked,” Kofler said "Turns out it's every night.” Kofler works with th«* seven Duck quarterbacks, and par ticularly with the freshmen and sophomores. Gregory is in his second year as a GA. and his experi ence has earned him the nick name "Legendary" from the other GAs. Gregory played college foot bull at Washington State and then spent the 1987 season coaching at Division 111 Wash ington University in St. Ixmis doing "full-time work for part-time pay" before coming to Oregon Gregory runs the offensive scout team with Whittle, and assists defensive coordinator Denny Schuler with the Duck defensive hacks. Maday played and then coached for three seasons at Ghico State before following his former coach, and present Oregon offensive coordinator. Mike Hellotti to Oregon. He got his degree in physical ed ucation before coming to Ore gon. and he is currently work ing on his graduate thesis. "But I've put the thesis on hold (during the fall) I pull it out and work on it when I find time, but I also have to take care of other stuff, and pay bills and do laundry," Maday said. Whittle, the "old man" of the group at 31, played at Michigan State before return ing to his native Seattle, where he coached high school football. Me also spent two years as a fisherman in Alaska and then returned to coaching at Eastern Washington before coming to Oregon to help de fensive line coach Joe Schaffeld. During the week, the GAs spend their mornings watch ing hours of game film in or der to draw up plays for the scout team to run at practice. Afternoons are devoted to practice, where the GAs work with players individually dur ing drills, then run the scout team, which is made up of younger players who run the upcoming opponent's offense and defense. The (’.As evenings include coaching staff meetings and more film watching. Their typical day begins at 8 a m. and often ends at 9 or 10 p.m. or later. Goach Brooks, himself a for mer graduate assistant, appre ciates the contributions made by the GAs. “They do a great job with the scout teams, and they spend hour after hour break ing down film."
